Why I Bought an MP3 Player in 2025

In an era where people are racing to get the latest smartphones and all-in-one devices, I decided to go in the opposite direction. Instead of upgrading to the newest iPhone or Android, I bought something many would consider outdated—an MP3 player.

The Decision to Step Back

I’ve been making an intentional effort to limit my phone usage. I tried app blockers, screen time limits, and even grayscale mode, but the temptation to scroll and check notifications was always there. Eventually, I realized that the best way to truly disconnect was to remove the source of the distractions.

That’s why I’ve decided to replace my smartphone with a Kindle for reading and an MP3 player for music. This way, I can still enjoy the things I love without being constantly bombarded by notifications, messages, or social media.

Why an MP3 Player?

Smartphones can do everything, but that’s not always a good thing. Here’s why I opted for a dedicated music device instead of relying on my phone:

1. No Distractions, Just Music

With an MP3 player, I don’t have to worry about getting distracted by emails, texts, or social media. It’s a pure listening experience—no notifications, no endless scrolling, just music.

2. Longer Battery Life

Unlike a smartphone that drains quickly when streaming music, MP3 players are designed for long playback hours. Some can last days or even weeks on a single charge.

3. FM Radio & Recording Features

One feature I missed from older devices was FM radio. My MP3 player brings that back, allowing me to tune in to live broadcasts without needing an internet connection. It even has a built-in recorder, which can be useful for voice notes or saving parts of radio broadcasts.

4. E-Book Slot for Quick Reading

While my Kindle is my go-to for serious reading, my MP3 player has a small e-book slot for quick access to text files—perfect for reading lyrics, notes, or short articles on the go.

5. The Joy of Curating My Own Library

Unlike streaming services that push endless recommendations, having an MP3 player means I have to consciously select and download the music I want to listen to. This makes me appreciate my collection more, and it also prevents me from mindlessly skipping through songs.

The One Trade-Off: File Transfers

Of course, using an MP3 player in 2025 isn’t without its inconveniences. Unlike streaming, where everything is available instantly, I have to download music on my laptop and transfer it manually. But in a way, that extra step makes me more intentional about my music choices.

Looking Forward to a Phone-Free Vacation

With my Kindle for books and my MP3 player for music, I’m excited for my upcoming vacation—a true break from screens. No iPhone, no iPad, just focused reading and listening.

Sometimes, going back to simpler devices isn’t a step backward—it’s a way to regain control over our time and attention.
